What is fire safety?

Fire safety refers to measures and actions to prevent a fire. If prevention has not been successful, the aim is to stop the fire for as long as possible and to keep it as small as possible.

Furthermore, many measures are taken to keep fire safety as high as possible, for example the fire resistance of the walls and doors, the presence of smoke detectors, sprinklers, fire hoses, extinguishers, blankets. Legally, certain rules have been drawn up in the field of fire safety for areas where many people come - such as a school, office building or shopping center.

The most important aspect of fire safety is to prevent the fire or to stop the fire as soon as possible. For example, smoke detectors are of great importance. A smoke detector will beep as soon as smoke is detected. In some cases, the fire brigade is immediately warned so that the fire can be tackled as quickly as possible. If the smoke detector goes off, you still have to wait for the arrival of the fire brigade. What can be done yourself in case of a small, starting fire, is try to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher or fire blanket.

This should only be done if one can still escape without danger and if there is not yet much smoke. Smoke inhalation is deadly.

In addition, it is very important for fire safety to determine a clear escape route in advance. That has to do with flight safety. Each building has maps on the wall at several places in the building, showing how the escape routes run and where the emergency exits are located.
